Career
Gregor Sperzel is one of the versatile tromboneplayers, enjoying a multi-faceted career as a performer, educator, composer, arranger and teamplayer based in the moment in Amsterdam.
Born in 1994 in Schlüchtern, he had his first trombone lesson with Johannes Goltz at the age of 9. His first experience playing in an ensemble was with several different ensembles, big bands & orchestras around his home region. Later, he joined the Youth Jazz Orchestra of state Hessen (Kicks & Sticks) and the internationally renowned BuJazzO in Germany, led by Jiggs Whigham & Nils Klein. In this band played Sperzel for two years with Germany’s best top talents alongside many professional acts touring all over the whole world.
He won first prizes in solo, combo and big band categories at the national competition “Jugend Jazzt“ in Germany and afterwards he was awarded the soloist prize of the NDR Big Band in 2016, with whom he subsequently performed as part of the competition.
In 2020, he finished successfully his bachelor of music and has been started his master study in jazz trombone at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In September 2021, he got admitted for the Erasmus exchange program in Lucerne and studied with Nils Wogram & Andy Tschopp. Sperzel successfully graduated his master study in Amsterdam 2022.
Besides playing and writing music, Sperzel joined the team of the new SoulClap Recording Studio in Amsterdam.
Among the key teachers who have influenced him are Erik van Lier, Felix Fromm, Martijn Sohier, Bert Boeren, Ilja Reinhoud, Bart van Lier, Nils Wogram and Andy Tschopp.
He is/was an active member of various ensembles such as the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Germany (BuJazzO), the National Jazz Orchestra of the Netherlands (NJJO), the Millennium Jazz Orchestra, the Pascal Klewer Big Band, the Dutch Jazz Collective, the Valvetronic Brassband, LE DIONISOS and the Miracle Horns.
